Annual Events

The Bowman Open Optional Program features many educational and social activities that build a sense of community among students and their families. Your support and participation is crucial to these activities. It takes the whole community to assure these events continue.

Here are descriptions of important meetings and events.

Parents’ Meetings

The Open Optional Program holds quarterly meetings where parents, teachers and the school principal discuss current and future business concerning our program. The meetings are held in the evenings and usually run about 1 ½ hours. The Parent group is a not-for-profit organization, and these meetings are the equivalent of a board meeting. Parent participation is needed. Your child enrolled in the optional program makes you a member of theparent group.

Welcome Back Potluck

An annual, back-to-school potluck is held each fall to meet and greet old and new families in the program.

Holiday Sing-a-Long

The sing-along is an evening gathering in December with a dessert potluck. BOOP families and staff meet at the school to sing holiday songs of all denominations (with the aid of an overhead projector). A volunteer pianist is always in demand and in years past, students have provided accompaniment.

Winter Crafts

This long-standing Optional Program activity is held in December. Teachers open their classrooms for a half-day of crafts. Each classroom hosts several activity tables and parent volunteers supervise the crafts. All BOOP students travel from room to room, participating in crafts. Candle-making, ornament-making, edible ‘tree’ cones, oranges studded with cloves, and a community service sewing project have been a few of the yearly favorites. No need to worry if you’re not ‘crafty’ – each classroom has a parent coordinator who works with the teachers to select the crafts. The instructions and materials are provided at each table. Parent volunteers guide the children through the activities. Winter crafts is a fun way for parent volunteers to interact with students from every family group.

Square Dance

This event is a family favorite! Teachers, parents, students and siblings have been spotted…even those of us with two left feet spinning and do-si-doing. A professional caller and a talented band has everyone steppin’ it up & yee–hawing! Families bring their favorite snack to share, and BOOP provides the drinks.

Mini Courses

What is something you have expertise in or a hobby you enjoy? Could you share your knowledge through activities for elementary children? Then we encourage you to become involved in mini-courses! Held on two ½ days, parents lead a course. Mini-course leaders decide the ages and numbers of children in their course. Successful courses in the past have included mural painting, zoo tours, basketball, outdoor cooking, candy-making, knitting, and rock climbing. In addition to course instructors, parent volunteers are needed to assist in these courses.

Homer Sea Week

This biannual event, open to all BOOP families, is held during a spring weekend in Homer. This activity is family driven and is not an Anchorage School District event. Families are responsible for transportation and lodging. Some families camp in tents, others stay in campers, or reserve rooms at the Driftwood Inn, the Ocean Shores or other places of choice. Sea Week often coincides with either the Shorebird Festival, Mother’s Day weekend &/or the weekend with the optimum low tide. Saturday is usually spent investigating tide pools, visiting the city of Homer, and enjoying a potluck barbecue, kite-flying and games on the beach. A Sunday activity — such as a boat ride across the bay or a guided tour of tidal pools — requires early reservations and prepayment to receive a group discount.

BOOP Alternate Spring Field Trip

In lieu of Sea Week, a committee will coordinate a Spring Field Trip for all BOOP families. In the past, trips have included a day at Birchwood Camp, at Portage Glacier, and a potluck picnic at Kincaid Chalet.

End of the Year BBQ

This is held on the last day of school, from about 5:30 to 8 p.m. and is held on the school playground. The Parents’ Group provides hot dogs and hamburgers, and families bring side dishes in potluck style.

Buddy Family

Our Buddy Family program welcomes new families and helps them experience a smoother transition into the BOOP community. Existing families serve as liaisons and are paired with incoming families to answer questions.

School-wide Events

In addition to our program events, the Bowman PTA hosts an annual Book Bash, Fall Carnival, Math & Science Night and monthly Movie Nights for all Bowman families to enjoy! Many BOOP parents are involved in supporting Bowman school events.
